Online Litter Registration terms with their definitions

Action
The action selected by the sire owner determines the status of an online litter registration submitted by the litter owner.

Hold - One of the three desired actions the sire owner can select from for a particular litter. When held, processing of the litter is delayed, awaiting future action.

Held - The sire owner has delayed processing of the litter, awaiting future action.

Approve - One of the three desired actions the sire owner can select for a particular litter. When approved, processing of the litter will proceed.

Approved - The sire owner has given consent to process the litter.

Deny - One of the three desired actions the sire owner can select for a particular litter. When denied, processing of the litter is cancelled and the dam owner is notified.

Denied - The sire owner has declined consent to process the litter. The dam owner will be notified.

Address:

An address of record is the street address that AKC has on file.

Artificial Insemination
The introduction of semen into the female reproductive tract by artificial means.

Fresh semen inseminations require that both the sire and dam are present, at the same time, during extraction and insemination.

Fresh extended (chilled) semen can be extracted and extended by any person authorized to extract and extend semen. The semen must be extracted from a dog within the USA and shipped to a point within the USA only.

Frozen semen is extracted, frozen, and stored for future use. The collection must be reported to AKC, and the collector/storer must be familiar with and complying with the AKC regulations for record keeping and identification of dogs.

Bitch:
A female canine.

Breed:
A domestic race of dogs (selected and maintained by humans) with a common gene pool and a characterized appearance and function.

Breeder:
A person who breeds dogs. Under AKC rules, the breeder is the owner, or the lessee, of the dam on the date of a mating that results in a litter.

Breeding Age Limits:
According to AKC rules, a dam must be at least 8 months old, but not more than 12 years old, on the date of mating. A sire must be at least 7 months old, but not more than 12 years old, on the date of mating.

Certificate Issue Date:
The date AKC issued the Registration Certificate. This is found near the American Kennel Club seal on the certificate.

Crossbred:
A dog whose sire and dam are representatives of two different breeds. AKC cannot register a crossbred dog.

Dam:
The female parent o dog.

Dam Name - The unique name given to the dam during AKC dog registration. AKC rules prohibit changing the registered name of a dog.

Dam Owner - The person who, according to AKC records, is the registered owner of the dam.

Dam Registration Number - The unique number assigned to a dog when it is individually registered with AKC.

Dam Owner Email - The electronic mail address of the dam owner.

Dog:
A male dog; also used collectively to designate both male and female.

Expedite Litter Kit Delivery:
Expedited litters take three to five business days for the litter owner to receive the litter kit after the litter is completed and approved by the sire owner. This service requires an additional fee of $17.

Fees:
Charges for AKC services. These are determined by AKC's Board of Directors and are subject to change without notice.

The $25 processing fee is a nonrefundable charge to process an application.

A puppy fee is charged for each puppy in a litter. Puppy fees are added to the basic processing fee to determine the charge for registering a specific litter.

A late fee is charged for all litter applications that are submitted more than six months after date of birth (whelp).

The $35 Online Breeder Classifieds Fee will be refunded if the litter is unregisterable or if all members of the litter are already registered; otherwise, it is nonrefundable.

Foundation Stock Service (FSS):
The Foundation Stock Service is an optional record keeping service for purebred breeds not currently registrable with AKC.

Inbreeding:
The mating of two closely related dogs of the same breed.

Incapacitation:
When a recorded owner is unable to sign AKC documents due to an illness or handicap.

Lease:
The assignment of breeding rights by the recorded owner of a bitch to another person for a specified period of time. Only bitches may be leased.

Limited Registration:
Restricted registration that prohibits both AKC registration of any puppies produced by this dog and participation in conformation events. Limited registration is assigned to a dog by its breeder. Only the breeder can revoke a limited registration.

Litter:
A litter is the puppy or puppies of one whelping.

Litter registration is the recording of the birth of a litter of puppies that are offspring of an AKC-registered sire and dam of the same breed.

A litter kit contains an Individual Dog Registration Application for each puppy in a litter and a litter record in order to maintain the proper written records required by AKC regulations.

A litter record is a form used to maintain the proper written records required by AKC regulations.

The litter owner is the person who is the owner or lessee of the dam when the litter is whelped.

Litter Date of Birth:
The date the litter was born. (Also known as the Whelp Date.)

Females:
The number of female puppies in the litter to be registered. AKC only registers living dogs.

Males:
The number of male puppies in the litter to be registered. AKC only registers living dogs.

Mating:
The sexual coupling of a dog and bitch.

Close mating is a condition where there is less than 4 months and 15 days between either:

  • The date of mating of a previously registered litter and the date of mating of a newly submitted litter application for the same dam.

  • The whelping date of a previously registered litter and the whelping date of a newly submitted litter application out of the same dam. Will cause the rejection of a litter application for questioning.

Multiple Sired Litter:
Litter resulting from a bitch mated with more than one sire during her season.

Power of Attorney:
When a recorded owner grants another individual the authorization to sign AKC documents on his/her behalf.

Registration Certificate:
The document issued by AKC to the registered owner of a dog when it is individually registered or transferred to a new owner.

Sire:

Statement of Legal Rights:
A form authorizing a person to act for a deceased person in AKC affairs. The form must be notarized.

Stud Dog:
A male dog used for breeding purposes.

Stud Dog Power of Attorney:
A completed form (used primarily by handlers) that authorizes AKC to accept the signature of someone other than the actual owner of the stud dog named. This form can be used only on litter applications for litters sired by that dog. The form is valid for one year; a new form must be filed to extend authorization.

Submission Date:
The date which the litter owner entered the online application to register a particular litter.

Total Puppies:
The number of males and females in a litter.

Transaction Number:
A unique number AKC assigns for tracking purposes to an online application.

Whelp:
In whelp
is when the dam is pregnant.

The whelp date is the date on which the puppies are born. Also referred to as the litter date of birth.

Whelping is the act of birthing puppies.
