"We are proud to have all 153 AKC-registered breeds and all 50 states represented at the show this year. Top-ranked American dogs will be joined by competitors from 20 countries including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia and Japan making for an exciting competition for both entrants and the millions of viewers at home."

Sixty-six Dachshunds (three varieties) lead the entry tally followed by 43 Poodles (three varieties) and 31 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Three breeds, the Labrador Retriever, Beagle (two varieties) and Chihuahua (two varieties) each have 30 entries. Select top dogs from recognized foreign registries were also invited.

The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship offers more than $225,000 in prize money. The Best in Show winner will receive over $50,000. The breeder of the Best in Show winner is awarded $15,000.

Approximately 1,000 dogs representing nearly 40 percent of the total are also entered in the "Bred-by" competition. The owner/breeder/handlers bring their best breeding stock to compete for cash prizes and the title of Best Bred-By-Exhibitor in Show.

"This show provides a unique opportunity to recognize purebred dog breeders who are the heart of our sport in a special way," said Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO. "For the first time this year we are pleased to extend invitations to every National Specialty Best of Breed winner and, as always, we are delighted to acknowledge the responsible breeders who comprise AKC dog clubs with a special competition and $15,000 for the Bred-by Best in Show title."

"Additionally, our Junior Showmanship competition, with 176 entries is more popular than ever," added Sprung. "These talented teens and youngsters are the future breeders and life-blood of our sport. They met high academic standards in addition to qualifying for the event and they, along with their parents, should be proud."
