Pointing Breed Field Trials
AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championships

April 26 - May 5, 2004

The eleventh annual AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championships was held at the Branched Oak Field Trial Area - Raymond, Nebraska.

The host clubs, Nebraska Field Trial Clubs Association and AKC Gun Dog Championships Association, did an excellent job preparing and organizing the event. Assisting the clubs were memebers of the AKC Field Staff, led by Field Director Jerry Mann. The Chairman Tom Maneeley and Secretary Jean Armbrust had the event running smoothly.The Retreiving Stake, which ran from April 26 - 30, was a 30-minute single course, with finds and retreives required. The top 20 dogs were called back for a second series consisting of a 45-minute single course with a required retreive. Judges Tim Schillereff, Portland, OR and Francis Clasen, Garden Plains, KS spent five days in the saddle to select the top dogs from accross the country.

The Non-Retrieving Championship:

CC Papion a male German Shorthaired Pointer owned by Joe and Valerie Hanzel of Limerock, California topped a field of 94 to win this prestigious title. Pappion scored multiple finds during his strong forward race, finishing with plenty of power. Eldon Hondo, a professional trainer from Oroville, California, handled him. Second was Sadie Fair Lady, a Brittany female, handled by Scott Johnson for owner Bill Oliver of Wichita, Kansas. Third went to Scattergun's Maggie a GSP female owned by Ed and Trudy Moody of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Maggie was trained and handled by Ray Dohse. Forth was KJ's Mano War Chief handled by Bob Burchett for owners Ken and Judy Windom from Cambridge, Iowa. A Judges Award or Merit was awarded to Caden's Jasper handled by Dennis Brath for Dick Strang.

Judges for this event were "Iron Man" Ray Gorman from New Hampshire and the indestructible Roy Pelton from Texas. Both of these men rode hard for an average of ten hours a day to complete the 47 braces in four and one half days. The weatherman was kind to them providing moderate temperatures and clear skies.
