Mrs. Zena Thorn-Andrews
Mrs. Zena Thorn-Andrews, of Worcester, England, attended her first Crufts in 1965 and hasn’t missed one since. Having grown up with German Shepherd Dogs, she joined the Irish Wolfhound Club to learn more about the breed. In 1967, she bought her first show dog, who later became a Champion and top Irish Wolfhound for four years.
In 1970, Mrs. Thorn-Andrews added Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds to her Drakesleat kennel. She, in collaboration with Jeff Horswell, has been the top breeder in one or both breeds every year since 1975. Mrs. Thorn-Andrews was the first U.K. breeder to breed or own 100 champions, and the total now stands at 124 champions.
Mrs. Thorn-Andrews began judging in the 1970s and is approved to judge all breeds in the United Kingdom and in FCI countries. She is the only U.K. judge to be passed for every breed with Challenge Certificates. She has judged many times at Crufts, her most prestigious assignment was judging BIS in 2007, and she has also judged the Hound, Working and Pastoral groups there.
The German Kennel Club has awarded Mrs. Thorn-Andrews the Baron Von Gingins medal for her outstanding contribution to the Dachshund breed. She is the first breeder outside Germany to be so honored.
