Sunday

Sunday’s portion of the competition started off with Round Four, a Jumper’s course. There were many technical aspects to this course on each height level. The large dogs had a long lead-out from the start, however, this did not aid all the dogs since the speed at which the dogs were going, made the turn into the fourth jump very tough. The courses certainly required the handlers to know where they needed to be to support their partners!

The handlers certainly needed to utilize all their skills to insure their dogs knew exactly where to go. Saturday

Saturday’s competition started off with Round One and the dogs attacked the Standard course with zeal. The course had many difficult handling elements, including approach angles, pull-throughs and areas where the dog would need to work well ahead of the handler. One area that the dogs seemed to have some trouble with was the off course jump prior to the open tunnel and more than a few took the off course broad jump on the way to the weave pole entry, and judge Dan Dege was there to see it all!

The course for the maxi dogs, judged by Terry Smorch, was a bit different than the course for the mini and midi dogs with the large dog teams having some similar challenges and some very different ones as well. The multiple options after the tire jump gave numerous dogs a bit of trouble and a few took the wrong end of the open tunnel with their long jumping strides.

Winners in the mini dog category were:

1st Place:        Dee Anna Gamel and Shetland Sheepdog, Kelsie
                                      0 Faults, Time of 34.23

Next up was Round Two Jumpers with the Midi dogs up first, followed by the Maxi dogs and Mini dogs bring up the rear. In the early part of the course, a two-seventy/serpentine combination into the off-side open tunnel needed some special attention by the handlers as well as a tough situation on how to handle the wrap into the chute. For those who traversed it well, it was a wonderful sight to see!

Friday

You don’t have to be Scandinavian to tryout for Norway! Numerous outstanding dogs and handlers from around the country have gathered in Hopkins, Minnesota to test their metal at the world team tryouts held at the Hopkins Soccer Arena.

Team Coach Nancy Gyes and Assistant Coach Kathie Leggett prepared a series of practice stations that reflected much of the European course design flair. Each team was given two minutes at each of three stations to be used in any manner they deemed best to utilize the time given them. Many teams had coaches accompany them to aid in best usage of their time and for immediate feedback on obstacle performance and handling technique.

Many teams were veterans at the tryouts and many were new to the process, but no matter what, excitement and anticipation was evident in the air.

A welcome reception was held at 6:00 pm with snacks for all.  The all important running order draw was held.  Coach, Nancy had bone luggage tags from Doggone Good Company that were numbered and when drawn, was the order in which the teams would run on Saturday in the first round.  The handlers drawing number one were cheered loudly.  Lorrie Abbott, ABBA Dogs, donated luggage tags that had the AKC Tryouts logo and handlers name and address as a special gift for all.  Brad Zacho donated first place prizes of a USA leash for the weekend.

The special surprise announced was a number of people who made monetary donations to the world team.  Susan Crank, Gayle York (Bow Wow video), John Peterson and many others showed their support of the world team.
