World Agility Championships
World Team in Spain: Day Five

September 23: Valladolid, Spain

Day 5 - Part 2

The small dog team was the fifth team to run in the Agility Team event today that featured the standard course. There were many places on the course that could give the dogs and handlers trouble, and they did.

Dee Anna & Kelsi led the team off and ran a beautiful course both clean and fast with a time of 40.43. Erin & Jag had one fault bringing in a blazing time of 39.03 with 5.00 faults, and Glenda & Bailey had a few faults which were scored at the maximum time of 80.00 with faults of 100.00. Even though only one run was clean, the team never gave up and really exemplified what sportsmanship is all about. The team is currently in 17th place.

Agility Team - Small Dogs

Agility Team - Medium Dogs

Today is the opening day to the World Agility Championship here in Spain! 32 countries will participate in the hopes of bringing home the gold. Listed below are the first ten placements for the individual jumping runs as well as the placements for all of the U.S. individual competitors of the AKC World Team.

INDIVIDUAL JUMPING COURSE, SMALL DOG TEAMS - JUDGE: BERN HUPPE - AUSTRIA

SMALL: Course time: 32.00
Placing: 8th: Erin Schaefer & Jag: 33.03; 1.03 Time penalty
Placing: 32nd: Andrea Samuels & Chase: 37.78 including course time faults
Placing: 52nd: Dee Anna Gamel & Kelsi: 50.00 time and 100.00 penalty.

Standings for Small Teams: 1st: Russia(Katutis), 29.68; 2nd: Holland(Ebben); 31.65; 3rd: Germany(Walther); 31.89; 4th: Switzerland(Eberle), 31.90; 5th: Switzerland(Schmid), 32.19; 6th: Czech Republic(Edrova), 32.53; 7th: Czech Republic(Divis), 32.73; 8th: United States(Schaefer), 33.03; 9th: South Africa(Bristow), 33.13; 10th: Belgium(Heghe), 33.22

The small dog course had a myriad of technical areas to tax both handler and dog. Dee Anna led off for the small dog team and handled the course well until a bobble in the weaves and a wrong course dropped her down in the standings for her first run of the individual competition. Next, were Andrea Samuels & Chase both made a great showing for their first time out in international competition with a score that included only time penalties. Erin & Jag ran the course very nicely and it showed once they crossed the finish line. Their time was good enough to finish in the top ten.

INDIVIDUAL JUMPING COURSE, MEDIUM DOG TEAMS - JUDGE: BERN HUPPE - AUSTRIA

MEDIUM: Course time: 32.00
Placing 10th: Karen Holik & Sizzle: 33.30; 1.30 Time penalty
Placing 49th: Jean Lavalley & Taz: 50.00 time and 100.00 course penalty.

Standings for Medium Teams: 1st: Slovania(Trkman), 29.94; 2nd: Czech Republic(Liska), 30.55: 3rd: Switzerland(Ericsson), 30.63; 4th: Belgium(Danckaers), 30.94; 5th: Latvia(Akimova), 31.34; 6th: Belgium(Tielens), 31.83; 7th: Japan(Naito), 32.45; 8th: Switzerland(Stettler), 33.06; 9th: Slovenia(Trkman), 33.16; 10th: United States(Holik), 33.30

The area that gave most handlers and dogs a problem was the #15 to #16 jump. Many took their dogs through the two jumps instead of around the outside of #15. Karen and Sizzle gave a solid showing with only one heart-stopping moment near the end of the course for her first run of the competition. She ended up with only a time penalty added to her score. Jump #12 gave Jean & Taz some problems resulting in the maximum score possible; however, they were fast and connected throughout the rest of the course.

INDIVIDUAL JUMPING COURSE, LARGE DOG TEAMS - JUDGE: JOSEP BOIX - SPAIN

LARGE: Course Time: 35.00
Placing 4th: Linda Mecklenburg & Stellar: 31.74, Clean run
Placing: 17th: Gerry Brown & Sterling: 33.25, Clean run
Placing: 77th: Wendy Pape & Surf: 38.82 with penalties of 8.82 (Time and standard fault)
Placing: 69th: Ann Braue & Spree, 37.26 with penalties of 7.26 (Time and standard fault)

Standings for Large Teams: 1st: Germany(Vaanholt), 31.63; 2nd: Germany(Cerny), 31.67; 3rd: Great Britain(Munnings), 31.70; 4th: United States(Mecklenburg), 31.74; 5th: Spain(Grau), 31.85; 6th: Great Britain(Garret), 31.87; 7th: Austria(Brandstetter), 31.87; 8th: Finland(Leinonen), 32.25; 9th: Great Britain(Dawkins), 32.28; 10th: Denmark(Lorentzen), 32.35

The long, straight start to the course into a flat entry to the weave poles gave many of the teams problems today, including a couple of our teams. Leading off the large dog team was Linda Mecklenburg and Stellar, who gave a fantastic performance of handling and teamwork to take 4th place in the fast and furious jumpers run. Gerry Brown & Sterling did a wonderful job executing a consistent, fast run. Both Wendy Pape and Ann Braue had trouble gaining the weave pole entry, but both came back very strong for the remainder of the course.

The Agility Course for Small and Medium Teams will follow at the end of the day.
