2002 World Agility Championships
October 4-6, 2002 - Dortmund, Germany
AKC/USA World Team Practice - August 21, 2002

Thirteen excited dogs and enthusiastic handlers met this past weekend in Minnesota. The World Agility team held their only practice before representing the AKC at the World Agility Championships in Dortmund, Germany on October 4, 5, 6, 2002.

These top handlers and dogs performed many difficult obstacle sequences on a carpeted surface and outside to ready themselves for the upcoming event. Many of the courses practiced were actual courses used in past agility trials in Europe by the upcoming Championship judges. The teams also spent time analyzing runs to improve performance. The handlers were given physical exercises to work on as well as given a nutritional diet to prepare their bodies for peak performance in Germany.

Coach Dan Dege and Team Captain Sharon Anderson were very pleased with the ability of both dogs and handlers. The teams are very well prepared to defend their Gold medal in the Maxi division, 26" and their Silver medal in the former Mini division. Last year only 2 divisions were offered Maxi (26") and Mini (16"). The new Mini division is at the 14" height for the first time this year. The three teams at the 26" (Maxi), 18" (Midi) and 14" (Mini) heights have added to the variety of breeds in the competition, as well as added an extra day of competition to the event.

There are 71 Americans traveling to Germany for the competition. The cheers of these supporters in the stands add to the excitement of the event and the performance of the team.
