World Team Headed for Germany - October 1, 2002

The AKC/USA World Agility Team members flew from across the USA to Dortmund, Germany for competition with 30 countries. All the teams are eager for the competition to begin at the 7th European competition. "They have prepared well and are packed and ready," said Dan Dege, USA team coach. All team members will meet in Frankfurt, Germany and travel by bus to the hotel in Dortmund along with a cheering fan club of over 70 supporters and AKC personnel.

There are 28 Standard Teams (26" height) and 21 Midi Teams (18" height) and 20 Mini teams (14" height). The new height divisions have added an additional day of competition to the event. Thursday, Oct 3 will be the veterinary check-in for the dogs. The teams will practice at the event site on carpeting Thursday for the competition beginning Friday, October 4th.

"Saturday will be the finals for the team competition and the Sunday competition will determine Individual winners in all three heights," according to Sharon Anderson, Team Captain "These team members have worked hard and have great attitudes. They will represent AKC/USA Agility well," added Ms. Anderson.

All the teams will march in the traditional opening ceremonies wearing their uniforms and carrying the flag of their country. The closing ceremony consists of a traditional gift exchange between countries. The AKC/USA gift is a spread wing eagle above two American flags. It is mounted on a walnut laser engraved base with the words "American Kennel Club AKC/USA World Team, Germany 2002, World Agility Championship."

Anderson and Dege said both traditions are exciting and emotional experiences for competitors and spectators.
